LABORATORY COMPLIANCE MANAGER

POSITION PURPOSE :
Develops, Manages and implements processes that support the system-wide compliance program by: developing and implementing content for compliance education and training; conducting and/or overseeing compliance audits and investigations; conducting training and developing policies and procedures related to laboratory operations; and serving as the in-house expert on laboratory compliance issues.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
- Manages and conducts internal laboratory compliance investigations for all company laboratories, including communication, self-assessments, monitoring, and auditing. Develops and adheres to a laboratory compliance program.
- Ensures alignment of overall compliance plans with all 4 company labs with travel 1 week per month to all 4 labs.
- Develops and revises standardized policies and procedures to ensure laboratory compliance.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations including but not limited to Medicare and Medicaid regulations, CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act/Amendment) requirements, CAP ( College of American Pathologists) accreditation standards, and state licensure requirements. Monitors laboratory legislative and regulatory activity, both locally and nationally.
- Develops and revises standardized policies and procedures to ensure laboratory compliance.
- Communicates and distributes policies, procedures, and updates regarding laboratory compliance issues to all lab/pathology staff throughout the system.
- Serves as the resource for all compliance questions from the lab regarding pathology areas.
- Develops and disseminates standardized tools and resources and education and training programs to support laboratory compliance and operational policies and procedures. Develops and conducts specialized training for all lab/pathology personnel on compliance issues.
- Coordinates communications and activities regarding compliance between all 4 labs/locations.
- Oversees laboratory compliance self-assessments, coordinates laboratory audits, and identifies compliance risks and issues. Benchmarks and shares best compliance practices in the laboratory area.
- Follows up on concerns/reports of violations identified including the status of investigations. Ensures that appropriate actions are taken regarding issues, findings, or recommendations identified in the compliance audits, self-assessments, or peer reviews and shares this information with compliance leadership.
- Serves as Privacy Officer contact for Company. Maintains company patient disclosure logs. Responds to attorney and court requests for laboratory and pathology medical and/or billing records. Completes HIPAA investigation reports as needed and reports any breaches of HIPAA compliance to the Aurora Privacy Officer.
SPECIALIZED KNOW-HOW & REQUIREMENTS :
- Knowledge of laboratory science and technology equivalent to that which would be acquired by completing regionally accredited bachelor's degree program.
- Knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform this job are typically acquired through a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience within a health care environment that includes experiences in planning and implementing large scale projects that affect multiple departments and functions; implementing regulatory changes; identifying, investigating, and resolving complaints; and analyzing and interpreting laboratory regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of laboratory CPT coding.
- Knowledge of laboratory compliance issues and laboratory operations.
- Strong planning, problem-solving and change management skills. Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities, including the ability to lead diverse work teams.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong skills in personal diplomacy with demonstrated ability to handle sensitive communications with leadership, physicians, management, legal counsel and regulatory agencies.
- Strong organizational and time management skills; must be able to multi-task many projects simultaneously.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the Microsoft office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) or similar products.
